UN Backs African Push to Keep Mineral Wealth at Home

Five African mineral producers have been selected to join a new United Nations support programme designed to help resource-rich nations stop shipping their wealth abroad in raw form.
Guinea, Madagascar, Nigeria, Zambia and Zimbabwe will participate in the UN’s Country Support Mechanism on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, a move that significantly strengthens international backing for domestic mineral value chain development across the continent.
Announced in September 2026, the initiative lands just weeks before African Mining Week 2026, taking place October 14–16 in Cape Town under the theme Mining the Future: Unearthing Africa’s Full Mineral Value. The event will connect African governments and project developers with investors and technical partners pursuing opportunities across mineral production, processing and supporting infrastructure.
The UN programme offers tailored country-level support, prioritising policy advice and strategic planning; legal and regulatory expertise, environmental and social safeguards, and stronger coordination across domestic mineral value chains.
The timing aligns with aggressive national industrialisation agendas. Zambia is working to capture more value from its copper industry, while Zimbabwe expands lithium processing capacity. Madagascar is advancing value addition around rare earths and graphite, and Guinea and Nigeria are building out broader mineral value chains.
A widening portfolio of support
The mechanism joins a growing roster of African mining projects receiving UN and international financial, technical and institutional backing — a reflection of the continent’s rising influence over global supply chains.
In June 2026, the UN Economic Commission for Africa launched a five-year regional program to strengthen environmentally and socially responsible critical mineral value chains across the Southern African Development Community. Implemented in the DRC, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the program targets local value retention alongside industrialization and responsible mineral development.
Led by the UN Economic Commission for Africa through the African Minerals Development Centre and supported by Germany’s International Climate Initiative, the program tackles persistent constraints including limited beneficiation capacity, ESG compliance gaps and weak regional value-chain integration.
The UN Development Program is also preparing a continental flagship initiative on Africa’s critical minerals under its 2026–2029 Regional Program for Africa, focused on how producing countries can convert their resource base into genuine economic transformation — with investment and value-addition strategies calibrated to each nation’s infrastructure, financing and industrial capabilities.
Technology-led mining development is drawing support as well. Through the UNDP MineTech Accelerator, five African mining innovators are receiving seed funding to scale technology-driven solutions: Anchor Machines (Uganda), Zanfi Enterprise (Zambia), Milsat Technologies (Nigeria), Tukutech (Tanzania) and SYNCHROS (Democratic Republic of Congo).
