The United States has marked a major construction milestone at its new consulate compound in Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, with a project that U.S. officials say is injecting more than $95 million into Nigeria’s economy and has trained over 1,500 Nigerian workers.
The U.S. Consulate General in Lagos held a topping-off ceremony on October 6 to mark the completion of the highest structural point of the compound’s 10-storey chancery building, according to a statement on Wednesday.
The ceremony capped four years of construction work and collaboration on the main structure, bringing the diplomatic facility closer to opening. The milestone marks structural completion, rather than the completion of the entire compound.
Speaking at the event, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa and for Public Diplomacy Richard Michaels described the project as a lasting expression of the relationship between the United States and Nigeria.
“This New Consulate Compound reflects cutting-edge construction and engineering techniques, built to the highest U.S. standards for design and construction, and standing as a lasting symbol of what our two nations can achieve together,” Michaels said.
He said the development also underscored Washington’s commitment to strengthening commercial ties with Nigeria.
“This new compound demonstrates that America is investing in the future. And with commerce at the heart of our priorities, no place in Africa is better positioned than Nigeria, with Lagos as its economic hub, to drive shared prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic,” he added.
According to the consulate, the project’s economic contribution is reaching employees, subcontractors and suppliers across Lagos State and other parts of Nigeria.
More than 1,500 Nigerian workers have received training in construction standards intended to strengthen their competitiveness in the labour market beyond the project’s completion. A team of 120 Nigerian engineers, architects and administrators is currently leading the work alongside 43 American construction professionals.
U.S. Consul General Brandon Hudspeth welcomed Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, senior Nigerian government officials, diplomats, business leaders, representatives of U.S. companies and Nigerian alumni of U.S. government exchange programmes to the ceremony.
Guests participated in the ceremonial pouring of the final bucket of structural concrete onto the chancery’s roof — a construction tradition marking the completion of a building’s core structure.
“That is what we are building here at Eko Atlantic City. Not just a building, but the foundation for the next chapter of our partnership,” Hudspeth said.
The new compound occupies a 12.2-acre, or 4.94-hectare, site in Eko Atlantic City. Alongside the chancery, it will feature multipurpose rooms for public events and a new American Center designed to host programmes showcasing American culture and promoting cultural exchange with Nigeria.
The compound was designed by New York-based Ennead Architects and is being constructed by Illinois-based Pernix International.
